TheHazard of Soil Pollution
Friday, February 17th, 2012While we often hear about air pollution, we do not get a lot of information concerning soil pollution. Although many individuals are not informed regarding soil pollution, it is something that we should be worried about. It’s not as apparent as air pollution as it happens under ground. There are tests that could be run to tell you if the soil is healthy enough to be utilized.
If water is tainted, it could quite easily enter the soil and make the soil toxic. When this occurs the soil becomes less productive because the plants, flowers or trees will not grow as well. These days, most of the vegetables and fruits we eat have been affected by polluted soil. Air pollution can’t get better as the plants aren’t able to extract the carbon monoxide in the air due to soil pollution. Much of the soil pollution are due to negligence and blunders we humans made. Chemicals inside storage tanks are installed underground, and they often leak, making it possible for the chemicals to flow all through the soil. As a result, lots of plants stop growing and the area basically becomes dead with no life that can be found.
Landfills is one other example of how pollutants get into the soil. For many years, waste was simply dumped into landfills without any concern for what can happen. Water coming from rain or snow would carry these harmful toxins into the soil. The chemicals spread out by falling into underground rivers that transport the chemicals to various places. Luckily these days, a lot of landfills are taking steps to limit deadly chemicals from going underground.
Another problem is the use of pesticide sprays on crops and gardens. A number of organizations have been lobbying the government for some time in order to protect the soil from dangerous chemicals. Through more stringent laws and regulations on certain pesticide sprays and the increase in organic farming, there’s hope that soil pollution will improve. A lot of manufacturers would like to change by doing things like employing biodegradable materials in their products. The country with a lot of severe problem is the US. This has come about with the high level of development, together with a practically complete disregard for the environment.
A lot of people are being aware of soil pollution and are making efforts to lessen it. There are various programs being implemented in the United States to attempt to make the problem better by lessening soil pollution. As folks start to do more organic gardening and are being more mindful about their health, there is a great chance that the problem with pollution in our soil can be solved.
